What is a tincture?
A tincture is a concentrated botanical preparation made by extracting herbs in a carefully proportioned mixture of water and alcohol, known as a hydro-ethanolic solution.
At Wellth & Wild, our tinctures are traditionally prepared using carefully selected herbs, with a 1:3 or 1:2 herb-to-solvent ratio, unless otherwise stated. The choice of ratio depends on the individual plant and the botanical preparation being made.
Alcohol plays several important roles in the preparation of a tincture:
1. Extraction.
Alcohol and water work together to draw out a broad range of naturally occurring plant constituents from the herb.
2. Preservation.
Alcohol helps to maintain the stability and shelf life of the preparation by creating an environment less favourable to the growth of microorganisms.
3. Traditional herbal preparation.
The hydro-ethanolic extraction process provides a practical way of concentrating the plant’s naturally occurring constituents into a convenient liquid preparation.
Together, these properties create a rich, carefully prepared botanical tincture, capturing the character and naturally concentrated flavour of the herbs used.
